Las Comarcas de La Laguna de Apoyo

"The people are generally happy, industrious, clever and grateful for what they do have. Family is the primary value."

The Comarcas de la Laguna are situated on the rim of the beautiful Laguna de Apoyo, a natural crater lake. Although geographically close to the city of Granada, the community is isolated, connected to town by a 5km sometimes-impassable dirt road.

Providing Holistic Health Care

Clínica Apoyo

In December, 2020, Clínica Apoyo celebrated it's seventh year of operation. The Clinic provides basic health care, medicines and health education to the 3,000 residents of Las Comarcas de la Laguna de Apoyo. For a two dollar contribution, a patient receives a consultation with the doctor and up to a month’s supply of medicine. No one is turned away for lack of funds. The clinic facility includes a waiting porch, reception area, triage area, dental clinic, private exam room, pharmacy/store, and education area. This 700 square foot space is ideally sized to meet the needs of the community. Managing the Pandemic in the community has changed the way we operate. Now more than ever the Clinic emphasizes health education and outreach. Two days a week clinic staff spend their time making house calls, visiting families, checking in on the homebound and providing individualized services and education.

Coci-Nica: An investment with a guaranteed return

In Nicaragua: 700,000 families cook with wood.

What’s the problem?

Many Nicaraguan families cook over an open, “three-rock”, fire in a semi-enclosed space. For many hours each day, the cook and other family members breathe lung-damaging smoke. Thousands of children are burned every year. The family may spend up to 30% of its income to purchase wood. Or women, children and elderly family members must carry wood on their backs for miles. The harvesting of wood is rapidly deforesting the country and cooking fires are sending tons of climate-changing CO2 into our atmosphere. Respiratory illnesses are common, almost universal among women and children. Preparation of family meals, the very center of home life, is often dirty, expensive, unhealthy and dangerous.
